2008 Indianapolis Colts Outlook
For the first time in 24 seasons, the Colts will start playing from the Lucas Oil Stadium leaving behind the RCA Dome. Management is satisfied with coach Tony Dungy for this season, just as they have been for the past seven, and similarly pleased with quarterback Peyton Manning, who returns as starting quarterback for the 11th season. This may or may not be Tony Dungy’s last season, as he announced he would return for at least one more season. Whether or not we see him next year may well depend on the team’s final score in 2008. The Colts also promoted Jim Caldwell to Associate Head Coach, which puts him in line to inherit Tony Dungy’s spot whenever he decides to retire.
The team released three players including wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe, defensive tackle Anthony McFarland and linebacker Rob Morris. The team also lost Rocky Michael Boiman and Dan Klecko to the Philadelphia Eagles, Jake Scott to the Tennessee Titans and Benjamin Jeffrey Utecht to the Cincinnati Bengals. The NFL Draft also provided Indianapolis with some exciting new prospects. The team gained center Mike Pollak from Arizona State, linebacker Philip Wheeler from Georgia Tech, tight end Jacob Tamme from Kentucky, linebacker Marcus Howard from Georgia, tight end Tom Santi from Virginia, center Steve Justice from Wake Forest, running back Mike Hart from Michigan, wide receiver Pierre Garcon from Mount Union and center Jamey Richard from Buffalo.
Reaction to the Indianapolis Colts in 2008 has been mixed. Their rematch with the San Diego Chargers is gathering a great deal of interest, though most NFL fans are leaning towards the Colts. I purchased this box set when I was looking for color footage of WW II. However, when I got it in the mail, it turned out that these were documentaries made in the 1940s and most of them were shown in movie theaters as a tribute to the American troops fighting oversees and to get more people to enlist. When I learned of this, I was a little disappointed. After all, how good could 65 year old documentaries be, compared to the recent ones they show on the History Channel or National Geographic? The answer is: VERY. I own a lot of DVDs wth color footage of the Second World War but “World War II in Color” is by far the best of them all. Almost all of the action images of Allied fighter planes and bombers taking on Axis aircraft that you see in the History Channel’s excellent “the Lost Color Archives” series are taken from the films you’ll find on these discs. Most of the other color documentaries I’ve seen show amateur pictures taken by army officers or civilians that shot street images of marching soldiers, occupied cities or the ruined landscape and towns after the actual combat. Not so in this two disc box set. These pictures were shot by professional filmmakers who more often than not had earned their stripes in Hollywood or have had succesful careers in the movie industry after the war. The result of the life threatening risks they took to film this extrordinay footage is absolutely amazing.

John Ford’s “The Battle of Midway” tells the story of one of the greatest sea battles in history. You see battle ships and allied fighters defend themselves against the relentless Japanese kamikaze attacks. Although this is my least favorite documentary, due to the rather silly sense of humour that is sometimes present, it does provide us with plenty of breathtaking color images of the courageaous American fighter pilots in their quest to gain control over the Pacific.
“The Memphis Belle” is my absolute favorite WW II documentary. It tells the story of an Allied bomber making its 25th and final flight across the English channel to wreak havoc on the German industry. We are shown how the pilots are debriefed: what flight formation they need to maintain, what their targets are, etc. We are introduced to the crew and are shown what it was like for these men to travel to enemy soil and how a bombing actually takes place. We witness some awesome aerial images of an entire fleet of Allied fighters and bombers, see the gunners fight off Nazi airplanes and the downfall of one of their own bombers, all while we are privy to internal radio communication over the intercom. The tension and anxiety is clearly present in the crew’s voices but they still keep their head cool and get on with their jobs under life threatening circumstances. Afterwards we see the often damaged bombers return to English soil and witness the terrible images of men wounded in aerial combat and having their often crippled bodies taken care of by the medics.

“Report from the Aleutians” shows American forces fighting just as hard against nature as against the enemy. You see Allied fighters take of under the most dire circumstances and try to land wounded planes after the fight. This documentary may not feature the most impressive fighting images, but it does give us a good idea of what men had to endure on an island which has no peace time value whatsoever, since its harsh climate is unable to sustain human life, but wich became invaluable in wartime because of its strategic location. At the start of the War in the Pacific, this was as close as the Americans could get to Japan’s home islands.
“Eyewitness to War” shows us who the brave men were who shot the images we see in World War II documentaries. This was actually a series of images shot and commented on by a professional film maker, hired by the US Army to shoot black and white pictures of the events from the Normandy landing to the fall of Berlin, so the military leaders could study their own tactics and improve them for future battles. The color footage you see was shot by the fillm maker with his own camera so he could show his family and friends back home what he witnessed in occupied Europe. We see images of the citizins of London who try to lead normal lives during the nightly bombings that occured every day, the boarding of ships and landing vessels bound for France, the Normandy landings and the soldiers’ daily routines while fighting their way to Berlin with mention of the people in the film who did not make it back.
“The Fighting Lady” is a military documentary about airplane carriers during the War in the Pacific. We are introduced to the crew and get detailed information about the carriers themselves and what it was like to live inside them. There’s a lot of footage of fighters taking off from the carriers and wounded ones trying to make it back. Some do and some don’t, which provide spectacular pictures. There are also a lot of images shot by cameras that are mounted on the fighters’ guns so we get a good idea of what it was like to engage enemy fighters and strafe Japanese airfields, with detailed explanation of what exactly is taking place.
“The 6th Marines at Okinawa” is a documentary about the capture of this Japanese island. Besides impressive jungle warfare images, it contains footage of the interrogation of POWs and striking pictures of an enemy soldier who has had to amputate his own leg to survive.
“The Last Bomb” tells of the fight of the American forces against the Japanese home islands. The documentary contains fascinating footage of dog fights with enemy planes, the bombing of Japan, some beautiful close-up shots of the P51 Mustangs and the B29 bombers in action and the drop of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
In my opninion, this is a must have DVD box set for all World War II buffs. Especially if you like action shots of period American military aircraft, war ships, aiplane carriers, jeeps, tanks, halftracks and army trucks, you will not be disappointed.

This is a well-done production using a lot of imagination with real facts and images. I recently toured Pompeii and felt like I knew the people who died there. This DVD worked well with my Latin students after we studied Pompeii. I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Pompeii’s history.
I saw this documentary just before going to Pompeii. It was very informative even though made several years ago (what the heck, the eruption was in 79AD.)

PIERREPOINT: THE LAST HANGMAN is one of those films that emerges from the cracks in the theater ‘failures’ only to find its poignant message when released on DVD. Granted, the idea of a story based on England’s most famous executioner doesn’t immediately catch the interest of the general audience, but for those fortunate enough to either rent or buy this DVD, the rewards are plentiful. It is a little masterpiece of writing, acting, directing and production values.

Albert Pierrepoint was the third man in his family to ‘ascend’ to the list of executioners (capital punishment in England at the time was by hanging), and when he is accepted to the list in 1932 he begins what became the longest and most prolific career of British executioners. He took enormous pride in his work, assuring his peers as well as his ‘victims’ that every aspect of his job was done with obsessive professionalism: his timing of his duties was the shortest on record, meaning that from the moment he opened the door to the condemned prisoner’s room through the hooding and noose placement and tripping of the platform and subsequent death of the ‘criminal’, he spared suffering as much as was feasible. He was supported by a wife who kept the secret of her husband’s anonymous role and it was only when the Pierrepoint’s pride in his job became known that downfall of their lives is threatened. At times adored by the public for his assignment to hand the Nazi criminals and the famous murderers and eventually the target of the anti capital punishment activists, Pierrepoint’s professionalism sustained him until a final tragic assignment changed his view of his job.
Timothy Spall is splendid as Pierrepoint, capturing all of the nuances of the simple, honest man’s pride as well as his Achilles’ heel. Juliet Stevenson turns in yet another understated and completely realized role as Pierrepoint’s wife. Director Adrian Shergold, using a script written by Bob Mills and Jeff Pope, paces the film sensitively, drawing on the atrocious duties involved in the job of executioner (they actually had to prepare the bodies of the dead victims for the morticians!) along with the moments of pub frivolity to allow the audience to understand the true person Timothy Spall absorbs in his portrayal of Pierrepoint. The sets and lighting and cinematography could not be better. This is a film to view and absorb and appreciate the superior quality of acting of Spall and Stevenson. Highly Recommended. Volume Two of Naruto is what, in my oppinion, made the show a masterpiece. The character deatil shown here is some of the most enthralling in any anime. This volume contains the end of the Zabuza arc and the start of the Chunin Exams arc. And let me say, what a way to end Naruto’s first arc. It had me in tears. One of the most touching scenes I’ve ever seen in an anime. If you liked Volume One, you’ll LOVE Volume Two… and believe me, you’ll be itching for more.
Naruto Uncut Boxed Set Volume 2 is one of the best DVD purchases I’ve made. The series teaches a lot of life lessons for children and adults and the substance of the program is much more than you would initially expect. It teaches one to never give in even when the odds are against you- a very good life lesson. Naruto is one of the best anime series’ ever created besides Dragon Ball Z which is my all time favorite. It has great character depth & quality, awesome animation and epic storylines, battles and dialogue. But this judgment cannot be reached by just veiwing these first two DVD sets. This is the 3rd set of Henckels I’ve owned. I sent the first set to the local cutlery store for sharpening and they came back with a different personality. Didn’t cut like Henckels anymore. Really disappointed. In search of a replacement set, I got the lower end Twin Signature 11pcs set. It was stamped, not forged. They cut well, but the knife felt cheap compared with the real forged Henckels.
I am really satisfied with this Four Star set. Feels solid, even weight distribution from front to back, and cuts like butter. My friend has a set of Twin Crusine which is so well built that ended up being too heavy in the back. Feels like I am just about to lose control and dropped the knife. Gives me the insecure feeling that I might cut myself trying to overcome the Twin Crusine under control.
One thing I learn this time…. make good use of the sharpening steel. I finally got the courage to learn how to use the sharpening steel with the correct angle and position, it worked so well. Sharpen my other Henckles knife back to nearly new condition.
The knives themselves are fantastic, but the set really needs a regular unserrated 6-inch utility knife. Since buying it separately is outrageously expensive, I’ve had to pull a poorer-quality knife back out for now since this is a knife I used frequently. I love the santoku, had never used one before, but it’s amazing for chopping. The handles are a perfect size for me, a woman with larger hands, and a man would probably appreciate them as well (although the five-star series knives have even more substantial handles). I see other reviews saying they prefer the Twin series, but these are the higher-end knives, forged instead of stamped like the Twin knives. Overall I would recommend this set as a good starter, and suggest you buy other pieces like the utility knife, bread knife, and steak knives as you come into inheritances….
Set contains all the basics, the quality is very high, the price is fantastic. I have had a set of these knifes for 30 years so I bought these for my son. Henckel is such a good brand, why waste money on poor quality knives when you can have the best for a bargain price. You only have to buy a good set once in your life.

As a union journey man plumber I am always looking for the best product to increase my productivity. THis is the best Drill I have ever owned. Lightweight, Long Lasting and the Quality of being manufactured in Japan, not China like alot of its competitors. The battery technology and warranty are what really sold me. Having batteries go bad from overcharging or heat, the SoCal summers, is a big problem down here. THey have a warranty on the batteries for like 2000 charges. That is like 3 years, incredible. Also a problem is theft of tools and with the Panasonic I am the only person on the job with the tools so there is no confusion or misplacing of my tools. The only drawback is that Panasonic doesnt offer a full line of battery compatible cordless saws and lights yet. AS for this deal specifically where else can you get a top of the line Drill with 50$ in rebates. I paid the same for an 18v what most are paying for a 14.4v and mine is full of high technology. I completely reccomend this drill the the serious professional.
If you’re looking for a great cordless drill, look no further! I’ve owned 18 volt DeWalt and Makita cordless drills before, and the Panasonic blows them both out of the water. The torque is awesome, and even more importantly, the runtime is by far the best I have ever seen! This Panasonic comes with 3.5 amp-hour batteries, with the competition just now offering 2.4-2.6 amp-hour batteries (with their base batteries less, often 2.0 or 2.2 amp-hour). On the job, I can go for a couple of days on one battery, whereas the other guys I work with have to change their battery several times per day. Also, the ergonimics are very nice, the balance is awesome. It is definitely more comfortable to use than the “other brands” that I have used. If you are truly looking for a star performer, look no further – power, runtime, ergonomics, case – this is the best cordless drill/driver that I have ever used!!!
I have owned mostly DeWalt cordless tools for the past several years, including their 18v Hammer Drill/Driver. I bought this Panasonic on the recommendation of a good friend about six months ago — I will never go back.
High Points:
- Excellent Run Time (the batteries are really amazing)
- Great Torque
- Comfortable grip
- Solid chuck that is easy to tighten sufficiently
Low Point:
- Panasonic needs to expand the line to include a solid jigsaw (can they please work with Bosch on this one…), a slick flashlight with an infinitely adjustable head angle, a circular saw, etc. so that I can relieve myself of all my yellow cordless tools…
I really believe that if you give this one a shot, you will not be sorry… except for when your friends’ borrow it and will not give it back.
